I picked the piece Raqqa II because it was colorful and was patterned. I like the pattern because there is many things you can do with it. Also this piece had a repeating shape which I ended up using on my final project. My piece relates to the other art project because I used the repeating shape and I also used the idea of pattern of the different lines in the shape. I used triangles instead of circles and I used yarn as the medium instead of Synthetic polymer and graphite on canvas.
Raqqa II was created in America by an artist named Frank Stella in the year 1970. His art is based on the concept that only what can be seen is there. He strips his painting of stories or statements because even a brushstroke conveys too much personality. He titled the paintings after ancient, circular-plan cities. At first glance, this may look like a childlike pattern, but the play with the illusion and perception makes it much more than that.
I took risks with this art. I wasn't sure how I would continue the optical illusion effect as on the original piece, but I tried keeping the same colors flow through more than one triangle. Also, I overlapped the triangles some and probably should have overlapped more. I was originally going to use paint, like the original painter, but then I decided to use yarn to give a different effect. Also, the paint wasn't going on very straight which made the art look sloppy.
