I worked with Nathan and Christian. I found the information and said some of the slides. Nathan created the powerpoint and said some of the slides. Christian said some of the slides. The movement I was inspired by was constructivism. My piece relates to it because this style of art is a more architectural style that is modern art. My cupcake was constructed out of wire and paper making it a 3D piece.

The symbolism of this piece is to show that color is needed to be put back in life. In other words, a person should stand out from a crowd or be its own person. Also, this also represents the history of the world of how media had originally been black and white and then color was added to the media. This didn't work out very well because we put too much
water in the paint so the color didn't show up very well. I worked with Peyton, Danny, Morgan and Anna. Peyton, Danny, Morgan and me planned what we were going to do in the video. I made the goombas, Peyton made the Marios, and Danny make the film looking thing the video starts with. Morgan and I also painted the snake. Peyton sort of led this project, but we all helped film. Anna moved the snake in the end of the video. We collaborated pretty well. We each did a piece of the project and everything went smoothly. I created original art by creating a scene with unique ideas, along with rest of the group, to create the image we wanted. Our plan was to make the mario come out of the background, then move over to a piece of paper where goombas appear, then they turn into a snake that goes around the room where the snake covers up the image, and then we appear. We accomplished this mostly and I haven't seen this type of thing done before, so it is original. In this project, we did steal the idea of mario and the goombas, but then we transformed it into our own sort of scene. The challenges that occurred was originally how to move mario around to the places it needed to go. We ended up solving this by having him slowly move over to the spot where he needs to go. For one part, my hand is slowly moving it each step of the way. Also, we didn't want the goombas to appear out of know where, so we ended up putting a green pipe which is another idea that we stole from Mario. Another problem was how to move the snake around the room. We fixed this by attaching a string to the snakes front to slowly drag the snake around. One thing that I would have changed was the snake part because we ran out of time to make it slither like we had planned to so it looks like its not moving. The problem I have to solve was limited materials of cardboard and an ex-acto knife. The obstacles I had to overcome was how to add the texture and show the different stripes of the tiger without cutting all the way through the cardboard. I solved this by peeling each layer of the cardboard away until I got the texture that I wanted. Another obstacle I overcame was when more layers came up at once when I was peeling away the cardboard. To solve this I changed the texture of cardboard around it. I took the risk of doing this project because I have never done this type of thing before. My teacher ended up inspiring me to do this project because she did the same sort of thing with a fish. I wasn't sure about the amount of layers the cardboard had, so I figured this out as I went on the project. Another risk I took was that I randomly chose what type of texture each stripe is.
I developed my art making skills by using familiar items but I used them in different ways. One different way was how I used the cardboard. When I have used cardboard before, I cut all the way through it and created a stencil and this time I didn't do that. I also used the ex-acto knife in a different way by mostly using the tip of the blade to cut only the slightest bit to peal away the layers. I ended up gaining more control of the ex-acto knife by the end of the project which will help me in the future. The first mini lesson was to call in to Oliver Blank. This is a crowd rely project and this is where you call in to say something that you wish you would change or an apology to a person. Off of the calls, people are then going to make an art project out of the calls. I learned that art can be made by someone calling in a phone, verbally, visually, and many other different ways. If I was going to do this again I would choose maybe another person to apologize otherwise this was pretty successful.
The second piece that we did was make objects out of newspaper. In this project we got to make anything we wanted as long as we used newspaper. I ended up choosing to make a spike ball out of newspaper. I learned that newspaper dents pretty easy. Also I newspaper tore pretty easy so I ended up restarting and using a lot of tape. This piece was pretty successful because it looks how I would want it to. If I did this again, I would make smaller spikes to give a cooler effect, or I would paint it so you can't see the tape as well. The last piece that we made was a clay piece. I chose to make a chicken. The frog on the left is my friends who is also in the art class. I have made objects with clay before but then we made it with a solid inside. In this class I learned how to make a clay object with using two pinch pots which made a hollow center. I also learned that it is needed to have a hole in the body to help prevent the animal from exploding. I believe this animal turned out pretty successful but I wish I could add more effect of the feathers. Also, this was supposed to turn out to be like a fish, so this helps show how art can start as one thing and develop into something else. If I were to do this again, I would try to make the clay to be more smooth. I would also try making other objects. I Create Original Art I used my own ideas in my work by combining the queen of hearts from the movie, Alice and the Wonderland, and the queen of hearts card. In doing this, I created an idea that nobody in my class used and morphed two similar but completely different objects. A source I used was pinterest where I found many other objects that were morphed and saw that some people morphed famous paintings with cartoon characters from movies. My class mates were also a source of inspiration as they throw out ideas, I wrote them down on our brainstorming list. My classmates mentioned about merging something with a playing card thinking of with something magic but I ended switching out the queen of hearts. I Solve Problems When I was making the queen of hearts, I decided that I was going to make it into a stencil. One problem though was when I tried to make all the colors of the queen's dress black and white, no white showed up, only black. With doing so, I decided I was going to make all the colors, so I created a bunch of small lines, tracing the lines of my drawing, cutting out the section of all the colors but the white. The problem with this, is when I spray paint this, the paint would leak, so I ended up using a sponge to paint the paint on the stencil. This ended up not working out really well either, but it probably would have if I didn't make the paint so thick. I was worried before the project that the paint would leak in this way to, so I ended up taping the stencil down the same way I would for spray painting this. I also ended up using a sharpie to trace the lines because the lines didn't turn out as defined as I was hoping they would. http://www.pinterest.com/kiranruff/morphed-items/
This is a link to my pinterest board which we used for inspiration. The first piece of art we made during this lesson is a remixed character. This is where we took two different cartoon characters of our choice and combined them into one. I chose to do Pumba from Lion King and one of the minions from Despicable Me. I learned a lot of having to mix different elements to show the different characters, such as adding more detail to the minion and not putting the tail on Pumba. I also learned that little paint goes a long way and to always add the dark colors to the light when mixing. This piece was successful in the way that you could easily tell the different cartoons and there weren't a bunch of weird paint streaks (the painting lines were pretty much smooth.) Somethings that I might consider changing next time would be the way I combined them. I added Pumba's head to the minions body and I wish I combined them more. The second mini lesson we did was monster ink drawings. What you do is put a dot of ink on your paper and then blow the ink into whatever you want and then turn it into a monster by using sharpie/pen/pencil. What I learned from this, is it isn't as easy as it would be thought to be. I had to analyze the image and look at the image in many different ways to try to figure out what I should do to form the monster. The mediums I used was pen and sharpie, where I used some cross hatching to give the effect. The piece was successful in the final product looked like a monster and was somewhat creative. If I did the project again I would change how I did it. I think I would try to blow the ink into some specific shape or way where I can still be creative with it, but the overall image would fit together. The last thing we did was create a stencil that we spray painted. The image I chose to draw was a funny image of my friends face, where in the end, it looks like a good picture or her. We each brought in thin cardboard and then drew the image on there and cut it out to be spray painted. In this lesson I learned that it is necessary to tape down each small or thin pieces of the cardboard, otherwise the spray paint will leak through. Also in order to have the images inside of another part you have to cutout, you have to make a bridge or a small line of cardboard to connect that piece to another piece that isn't being cut out. The piece was successful because I was able to properly use the bridges and cut each piece out. Also, in the final product, the spray paint didn't bleed through much. |
